The Vernee Mars is the third Chinese smartphone brand, and costs 180 euros converted. The specifications include a 5.5-inch full-HD display and 4GB of RAM and Android 7.0 update to come out within weeks. Yet Mars do not make as much impression as previous Vernee smartphones. Why? Which you can read in this review.

Vernee Mars: Design
Take a quick look at the Vernee Mars and the chances are that you think that it is an iPhone7. The metal housing (in gold and gray) is reminiscent of the latest iPhone, which is partly due to the location of the antenna bands and camera. It is clear where Vernee got his inspiration from, but there are also differences. For example, the Mars has a fingerprint scanner on the side, which is less accurate than the most scanners. If he does is’ie quickly, but it often happens that you only have three attempts success. Furthermore, the smartphone features a USB-C port for universal charging, it has a larger 5.5 inch screen and a 3.5mm port. Take that, Apple 😉
The build quality of the Mars is fine: the device feels solid and is through the very narrow screen edges smaller than most 5.5-inch phones. However, he is very smooth, so a case can be useful.
Vernee Mars: Display, sound, and cameras
The display of the March break any records but is fine for an affordable smartphone. The full-HD resolution delivers on the 5.5-inch size for sharp image and color reproduction is good. The viewing angles and maximum brightness are highly satisfactory and all in all, I have very little to criticize the screen.

On the single speaker at the bottom, I am less positive. The position is not ideal, the sound quality is not particularly and the maximum volume is lower than competitive models. That does not mean that the speaker is bad because he does what he has to do.
The camera works properly, but the performance hit. Often he manages to deliver clean images with great detail, rich colors, and good focus. But it also happens that the camera goes wrong and rather blurry pictures are moreover are too dark or too light. The color reproduction can also be incorrect, with washed red and paving stones that are too orange. In photographing or filming the dark is not recommended: the sensor hardly captures light. Pictures are therefore virtually useless and although the flash for bin light creates, it does not improve the results.
The 5 megapixel front camera makes nice selfies and can easily be used for video calls, but again the quality is not very.
Vernee has provided the Mars old MediaTek Helio P10 chip with 1.8GHz octa core processor and 4GB of RAM. Which is not technically so advanced and not energy efficient, but it drives the phone smoothly too. In normal use, there is not to complain about the speed, though there are plenty of competing smartphones are faster (much). Consider the cost of EUR 140 Xiaomi redmi Note 3 Pro with a Snapdragon 650-soc and 2GB memory, good for an Antutu score of 75 thousand points. And Vernee’s own Apollo Lite – which is just as expensive as the Mars – has 87 thousand points. Mars does not exceed 49 thousand.
The device has 32GB of storage, 25GB of which is available. Like that was not enough, you can put a Micro SD card in the phone, where there is support for the Android Adoptable Storage function. Remember that the dual-sim support disappears because Mars has a hybrid slot for two SIM cards for one SIM card and SD card.

The phone’s battery life is – as with other Vernee devices – against. The 3000 mAh battery comes with normal use tight along one day (3 hours screen-on time), and you entrusted him heavier than you need for dinner already seeking power. Mars may intensively use so not good but performs in standby just okay. The MediaTek Pump Express fast charge function via USB c is fine, and the battery is charged within ninety minutes. Wireless charging or swapping batteries is not possible.
Also, an NFC chip to be missed; an understandable choice in this price range. It is unfortunate that a 4G frequency missing the 900MHz. As a T-Mobile customer, I fall back regularly therefore outside the Randstad at 3G speed.
Vernee Mars: Software (OS)
Unlike many other Chinese smartphone makers, Vernee provides its devices from an almost bare version of Android. This is laudable since Android 6.0 Marshmallow is self-use and the less matches a manufacturer, the faster roll out the updates. That seems to hit the Martian because Vernee left early November all know in December with Android 7.0 Nougat come -update. To prove that this is no idle claim, the company showed us pictures and a video of a working Nougat-beta on the smartphone. Fine, because the new Android version offers many new features and improvements.
But Vernee’s software policy provides plenty of room for improvement. Thus making it unnecessary MediaTek a dozen apps with which you can not remove and monthly Android security updates that Google releases ignored. Mars has the patch from April 1, after a software update that implements bug fixes.
Unknown smartphone brands that deliver good models with competitive price tags are enough. Vernee is one of them, so left it with Thor see and Apollo Lite. However, the latest model, the Mars is a less good buy. Compared to the competition, especially set the cameras and battery life disappoints. That is not to say that Mars is a bad smartphone because, for 180 euros ($199 USD), it offers an excellent price/performance ratio. But there are plenty China Phones (including the Apollo Lite) which are equally expensive and offer better value for money. The Vernee Mars, therefore, do not convince at all.
